University applications

University applications figures are out. They make for interesting reading. Numbers are down, but the top end (courses asking for ABB and above) will be as competitive as ever. I wonder how many more Unis will be forced to scrap courses? Check out the Guardian article on this: http://www.guardian.co.uk/education/2012/nov/28/university-applications-uk-students-down-ucas

Hi Julian and David

Thanks for the tips guys, I've got the offers I wanted from UCLAN and Glasgow before Christmas!! I'm going to reply now. Like I said, UCLAN is perfect for me - the right course and nearish to home. So I want to put UCLAN (CCC) as my first choice and then Glasgow (ABB). Does this sound like a good idea? This means that I get to choose between the 2 on results day - I might change my mind and fancy the Glasgow lifestyle.

Hi Rocky

Hold on! You can't put the higher grade as a backup ...

If you put UCLAN first as your "firm choice", then you will have to go there even if you get higher grades.

We advise that your backup has to be lower in grades than your "firm" choice.

Of course, if you choose UCLAN as first choice and get better grades than UCLAN requires, you can always go through adjustment (very, very few people are successful here - it's like a positive clearing) or take a gap year and reapply to higher grade courses.

Just to make it clear, I don't advise you to put Glasgow beneath UCLAN for the technical reasons above.

My advice would be to wait for alll of your offers. From memory, we did help you to apply to backups below UCLAN so they should give you offers too.

Good luck and choose wisely!!

David
